    After you have formatted it in XML:

    <EditText
         android:id="@+id/edittextid"
         android:inputType="text" >
    

    You can call it by declaring it and linking it to the view you specified in the XML like so:

    EditText et = (EditText)view.findViewById(R.id.edittextid);
