ALWAYS getting UNDEFINE…. why ?

Missing: quotes around the var, php output to js var, semicolon after var setting:

<script language="javascript">  
    <?php $imagepath = $_REQUEST["path"]; ?>
    var whatisthepath = "<?php echo $imagepath; ?>";
    alert (whatisthepath);
</script>
