    Use the validate macro and pass a custom method.

    class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base

      validate :validate_timeline

      protected

        def validate_timeline
          unless ends_at > starts_at
            errors.add(:ends_at, "end date cannot precede start date")
          end
        end
    end
