    In some browsers there is no click event for <option> elements. Instead you should use change event for <select> element:

    <select onchange="initialize.apply(null, this.value.split(','));">
        <option value="2.44331,2.442211">-sel places-</option>
        <option value="1.2,1.8">china</option>
        <option value="1.3,1.2">brazil</option>        
        <option value="1.4,13.3">australia</option>
    </select>
