How can I determine whether the first character of a string is a letter, regardless of the alphabet?

regExpIsLetter  = /^\w/;
regExpIsLetter.test('Å') -> false
regExpIsLetter.test('ç') -> false
regExpIsLetter.test('A') -> true
regExpIsLetter.test('š') -> false !! (czech)
regExpIsLetter.test('ф') -> false !! (cyrilic)
regExpIsLetter.test('ڂ') -> false !! (arabic)

=================

Based on answers I found “solution”. It’s the ‘simple’ regex:

regExpIsLetter = /^[A-Za-zª-ªµ-µº-ºÀ-ÖØ-öø-ȶɐ-ˁˆ-ˑˠ-ˤˮ-ˮͺ-ͺΆ-ΆΈ-ΊΌ-ΌΎ-ΡΣ-ώϐ-ϵϷ-ϻЀ-ҁҊ-ӎӐ-ӵӸ-ӹԀ-ԏԱ-Ֆՙ-ՙա-ևא-תװ-ײء-غـ-يٮ-ٯٱ-ۓە-ەۥ-ۦۮ-ۯۺ-ۼۿ-ۿܐ-ܐܒ-ܯݍ-ݏހ-ޥޱ-ޱऄ-हऽ-ऽॐ-ॐक़-ॡঅ-ঌএ-ঐও-নপ-রল-লশ-হঽ-ঽড়-ঢ়য়-ৡৰ-ৱਅ-ਊਏ-ਐਓ-ਨਪ-ਰਲ-ਲ਼ਵ-ਸ਼ਸ-ਹਖ਼-ੜਫ਼-ਫ਼ੲ-ੴઅ-ઍએ-ઑઓ-નપ-રલ-ળવ-હઽ-ઽૐ-ૐૠ-ૡଅ-ଌଏ-ଐଓ-ନପ-ରଲ-ଳଵ-ହଽ-ଽଡ଼-ଢ଼ୟ-ୡୱ-ୱஃ-ஃஅ-ஊஎ-ஐஒ-கங-சஜ-ஜஞ-டண-தந-பம-வஷ-ஹఅ-ఌఎ-ఐఒ-నప-ళవ-హౠ-ౡಅ-ಌಎ-ಐಒ-ನಪ-ಳವ-ಹಽ-ಽೞ-ೞೠ-ೡഅ-ഌഎ-ഐഒ-നപ-ഹൠ-ൡඅ-ඖක-නඳ-රල-ලව-ෆก-ะา-ำเ-ๆກ-ຂຄ-ຄງ-ຈຊ-ຊຍ-ຍດ-ທນ-ຟມ-ຣລ-ລວ-ວສ-ຫອ-ະາ-ຳຽ-ຽເ-ໄໆ-ໆໜ-ໝༀ-ༀཀ-ཇཉ-ཪྈ-ྋက-အဣ-ဧဩ-ဪၐ-ၕႠ-Ⴥა-ჸᄀ-ᅙᅟ-ᆢᆨ-ᇹሀ-ሆለ-ቆቈ-ቈቊ-ቍቐ-ቖቘ-ቘቚ-ቝበ-ኆኈ-ኈኊ-ኍነ-ኮኰ-ኰኲ-ኵኸ-ኾዀ-ዀዂ-ዅወ-ዎዐ-ዖዘ-ዮደ-ጎጐ-ጐጒ-ጕጘ-ጞጠ-ፆፈ-ፚᎠ-Ᏼᐁ-ᙬᙯ-ᙶᚁ-ᚚᚠ-ᛪᜀ-ᜌᜎ-ᜑᜠ-ᜱᝀ-ᝑᝠ-ᝬᝮ-ᝰក-ឳៗ-ៗៜ-ៜᠠ-ᡷᢀ-ᢨᤀ-ᤜᥐ-ᥭᥰ-ᥴᴀ-ᵫḀ-ẛẠ-ỹἀ-ἕἘ-Ἕἠ-ὅὈ-Ὅὐ-ὗὙ-ὙὛ-ὛὝ-ὝὟ-ώᾀ-ᾴᾶ-ᾼι-ιῂ-ῄῆ-ῌῐ-ΐῖ-Ίῠ-Ῥῲ-ῴῶ-ῼⁱ-ⁱⁿ-ⁿℂ-ℂℇ-ℇℊ-ℓℕ-ℕℙ-ℝℤ-ℤΩ-Ωℨ-ℨK-ℭℯ-ℱℳ-ℹℽ-ℿⅅ-ⅉ々-〆〱-〵〻-〼ぁ-ゖゝ-ゟァ-ヺー-ヿㄅ-ㄬㄱ-ㆎㆠ-ㆷㇰ-ㇿ㐀-䶵一-龥ꀀ-ꒌ가-힣豈-鶴侮-頻ff-stﬓ-ﬗיִ-יִײַ-ﬨשׁ-זּטּ-לּמּ-מּנּ-סּףּ-פּצּ-ﮱﯓ-ﴽﵐ-ﶏﶒ-ﷇﷰ-ﷻﹰ-ﹴﹶ-ﻼＡ-Ｚａ-ｚｦ-ﾾￂ-ￇￊ-ￏￒ-ￗￚ-ￜ]/
regExpIsLetter  = /^\w/;
regExpIsLetter.test('Å') -> true
regExpIsLetter.test('ç') -> true

regExpIsLetter.test('š') -> true
regExpIsLetter.test('ф') -> true
regExpIsLetter.test('ڂ') -> true
regExpIsLetter.test('4') -> false

Groovy code to generate regex:

def range = false;
def rangeStart = 0;
System.err.printf('[');
for(int i = 0; i < 65536; ++i) {
    def isLetter = Character.isLetter(i);
    if (!range && isLetter) {
        rangeStart = i;
        range = true;
    }
    else if (range && !isLetter) {
        range = false;
        if( rangeStart != i - 1 ) {
            System.err.printf('\\u%04x-\\u%04x', rangeStart, i - 1);
        }
        else {
            System.err.printf('\\u%04x', rangeStart);
        }

    }
}
System.err.printf(']');

Thanks.

    Many of JavaScript’s character classes are not Unicode-aware, per ECMA-262. Have a look at http://blog.stevenlevithan.com/archives/javascript-regex-and-unicode for more information.

    For great JavaScript / Unicode resources, I can’t answer any better than this existing answer to a slightly different question.

    EDIT: Checking with PHP, which has the /u modifier for checking strings as UTF-8, all of your examples above pass:

    var_dump(preg_match("/^\w/u", "ڂ")); // etc
