<div class='class1 class2' id='id1'>some text</div>    $('#id1').toggleClass('class3'); // doesn't work   $('#id1').toggleClass(' class3'); // doesn't work 

Do I have to parse the string?

    Your code should definitely work. In fact, the toggleClass example uses multiple class names!
