    var check = "";
    $("#yourcheckbox").change(function() {
        if($(this).is(":checked")) {
            check = "okay";
        }
        else {
            check = "";
        }
    });

    This does exactly what you ask, but the solution posted by @Rikudo is better if you can live without check having to contain “okay”.
