    Just “output” the object from the function like so:

    function RunIE
    { 
        $ie = New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application 
        Write-Output $ie
    } 
    

    or more idiomatically

    function RunIE 
    { 
        New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application 
    } 
    

    Then assign the output to a variable in your main script:

    $ie = RunIE
