You can use the following to check the memory status:

ActivityManager actMgr = (ActivityManager)getSystemService(Context.ACTIVITY_SERVICE);
ActivityManager.MemoryInfo minfo = new ActivityManager.MemoryInfo();
actMgr.getMemoryInfo(minfo);
long mem = minfo.availMem;
