Use labels as in this example fiddle. Markup:

    <select id="startDate">

    <select id="endDate">
        <option value="Aug 04">Aug 04</option>
    </select>
</form>

When this does not work, then there are some inherited styles interfering and try to set vertical-align: middle as shown in this demo.
