    You need to escape special chars in RegEx with a backslash \:

    preg_match('#\|~\|#', $s);
    preg_match('#%\*\|#', $s);
    

    You could also use preg_quote() to escape special chars:

    preg_match('#'.preg_quote('|~|%*|','#').'#', $s);
