    First command:

    $ echo abcdabcd
    abcdabcd
    

    Replace cd with gf. Note that only the first occurrence is replaced

    $ !!:s/cd/gf
    echo abgfabcd
    abgfabcd
    

    Repeat the substitution

    $ !!:&
    echo abgfabgf
    abgfabgf
