    Try Something like this

    <tr><td><?php echo form_radio('gender', '1', TRUE); ?></td><td><?php echo form_label('Male', 'gender');?></td></tr>
    <tr><td><?php echo form_radio('gender', '2', FALSE); ?></td><td><?php echo form_label('Female', 'gender');?></td></tr>
