how do i get

var employees=["Adam","Barb","Chris"];

to look like this?

var employees=[["Adam"],["Barb"],["Chris"]];

You could use map():

var employees=["Adam","Barb","Chris"];

var newEmployees = employees.map( function( item ){ return [ item ]; } );
