    For SQL server you can use CHECK constraint which allows you to define a predicate that all the rows must meet in order to enter the table. Like so:

    ALTER TABLE TableName 
    ADD CONSTRAINT CHK_ampm
    CHECK(ColumnName IN ('am', 'pm'));
