    Iterate the array of keys and use a reference for the end of the chain:

    $arr = array();
    $ref = &$arr;
    foreach ($tmpArr as $key) {
        $ref[$key] = array();
        $ref = &$ref[$key];
    }
    $ref = $key;
    $tmpArr = $arr;
