Question

I have run this json file through jsonlint, and it comes back as valid, but when I try to use it in jquery, I get the message that “placemark” is an invalid label. What am I doing wrong, please?

I think that the variable placemark is undefined here, because you are not retrieving your JSON file.

you should probably do something like (assuming your JSON file is named placemark.json):

function parseKML() {
    $.getJSON('placemark.json', function(data) {
        console.log(data.placemark.length);
    });
}
