    Date formatter approach looks like this:

    NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:@"hh:mm"];
NSString *hhmm = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:theDate];

// release dateFormatter if not using ARC... but use ARC
