    Enclose in DOM Ready Event , and your script in the script tags

    <script type="text/javascript">
        $(function() {
            $('.maya').click(function(){
                alert("hi");
            });
        });
    </script>

    Also make sure the jQuery file is included into your project..

    Seems to be working HERE
