I have this data set and trying to convert to as date so that I can chart it:

I tried

 y1 <- strptime(y, format = "%b-%y")

y1 getting all NA, any ideas?

You need a day to convert it to a date:

##Make each date the first of the month
strptime(paste("1", as.character(y)), format="%d %b-%y")
