<script type="text/javascript">
jQuery(document).ready(function(){
    jQuery('#form-validate-small option:selected').removeAttr('selected');
});
</script>

    This should work:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    jQuery(document).ready(function(){
        jQuery('#form-validate-small option:selected').removeAttr('selected');
        jQuery('#form-validate-small option:first-child').attr('selected', 'selected');
    });
    </script>

    Got it working on http://jsfiddle.net/VDw7B/3/
