I searched for this for a while but came up empty … hopefully someone here can help.

Is there a query I can run on a database (SQL Server 2005) that will return the number of rows in each table?

You could try something like this:

SELECT 
    [TableName] = so.name, 
    [RowCount] = MAX(si.rows) 
FROM 
    sysobjects so, 
    sysindexes si 
WHERE 
    so.xtype = 'U' 
    AND 
    si.id = OBJECT_ID(so.name) 
GROUP BY 
    so.name 
ORDER BY 
    2 DESC
