I tried this code

NSTask *task;
task = [[NSTask alloc] init];
[task setLaunchPath: @"/usr/bin/ping"];

NSArray *arguments;
arguments = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: @"-c", @"3",@"stackoverfow.com", nil];
[task setArguments: arguments];

NSPipe *pipe;
pipe = [NSPipe pipe];
[task setStandardOutput: pipe];

NSFileHandle *file;
file = [pipe fileHandleForReading];

[task launch];

NSData *data;
data = [file readDataToEndOfFile];

NSString *string;
string = [[NSString alloc] initWithData: data encoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding];
NSLog (@"ping returned:\n%@", string);

[string release];
[task release];

And got this

    Try replacing:

    [task setLaunchPath: @"/usr/bin/ping"];

    with

    [task setLaunchPath: @"/sbin/ping"];

    since that’s where ping is located.
