  • 0

I undeploy my Java EE app that uses an asynchronous logger that logs in its own thread from the Drools rules engine. I use it to log decisions the rules engine makes but I cannot let it have impact on the throughput, therefore it must run in its own thread.

I get pages of Exceptions when I undeploy it indicating that it was not closed properly. That might be true since the logger is just a thread like this:

while(true){
  log(something)
  sleep(someTime);
}

It may not have time to react properly when it is sleeping and the undeploy starts. Unfortunately I cannot get the thread itself from the logger, so I cannot join on it in a @PreDestroy method. How can I avoid the Exceptions when I undeploy?

the Excpetions:

    Rather use ScheduledExecutorService#scheduleAtFixedRate() instead of the old fashioned Thread#sleep(). You can use ServletContextListener to run it on webapp’s startup and stop it on webapp’s shutdown.

    @WebListener
    public class Config implements ServletContextListener {

        private ScheduledExecutorService scheduler;

        @Override
        public void contextInitialized(ServletContextEvent event) {
            scheduler = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
            scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate(new Task(), 0, 1, TimeUnit.MINUTES); // Schedule to run every minute.
        }

        @Override
        public void contextDestroyed(ServletContextEvent event) {
            scheduler.shutdown(); // Important! This stops the thread.
        }

    }

    Where Task can look like this:

    public class Task implements Runnable {

        @Override
        public void run() {
            log(something);
        }

    }

    If your environment doesn’t support Servlet 3.0 @WebListener, then register it as follows in web.xml to get it to run:

    <listener>
        <listener-class>com.example.Config</listener-class>
    </listener>
