tab <- sub("[[:space:]]+$", "[[:space:]]+$", x)
print(tab)

    x <- gsub("^\\s+|\\s+$", "", x) #eliminate trailing and leading spaces
    tab <- gsub(" +", "\t", x, ) #sub out spaces between for \t
