And I have to iterate through the xml document and find out the first occurrence of country = USA

<xsl:for-each select="catalog/cd[country='USA']">
      <tr>
        <td><xsl:value-of select="title"/></td>
        <td><xsl:value-of select="artist"/></td>
      </tr>
      </xsl:for-each>

how can we get only the first row from the condition provided.

Thanks in advance

    You can do the following:

    <xsl:for-each select="catalog/cd[country='USA']">
      <xsl:if test="position() = 1">
        <tr>
          <td><xsl:value-of select="title"/></td>
          <td><xsl:value-of select="artist"/></td>
        </tr>
      </xsl:if>
    </xsl:for-each>

    Also, not sure if it works, but you may want to try:

    <xsl:for-each select="catalog/cd[country='USA'][1]">
      <tr>
        <td><xsl:value-of select="title"/></td>
        <td><xsl:value-of select="artist"/></td>
      </tr>
    </xsl:for-each>
