    Shooting from the hip here. Is this what you are looking for?

    $('input[type="text"]').blur(function() {
      $(this).hide().after($('<span>').text($(this).val()));
    });

    $('input[type="text"]').keydown(function (e) {
      if (e.keyCode == 9) {
        $(this).hide().after($('<span>').text($(this).val()));
      }
    });
