Question

I’m new to Django, but it seems like this one should be easy. I am using Django 1.5 beta2, but I think it should be stable enough for something as simple as this.
Here are my classes in the register app.

class Shift(models.Model):
    begin_date = models.DateTimeField()
    finish_date = models.DateTimeField(null=True)

    def __unicode__(self):
        return str(self.begin_date) + ' to ' + str(self.end_date)

class Transaction(models.Model):
    begin_date = models.DateTimeField()
    finish_date = models.DateTimeField(null=True)
    status = models.CharField(max_length=10, default='Started')
    shift = models.ForeignKey(Shift)

    def __unicode__(self):
        return str(self.begin_date) + ' to ' + self(self.end_date)

But when I try to create a child transaction it fails.

I have manually dug into the sqlite database using sqliteman and can see that the table register_transaction does in fact have a shift_id column.

I feel like there must be something small that I am missing.

s does not have an id, since it hasn’t been saved.

Either call s.save() before you make the call, or use Shift.objects.create instead of Shift().
