In the recent hype over iPhone App programming, I got my hands on a MacBook. I have an idea for a program. Can I just write it in Objective-C and distribute it, or must I register with Apple Developer Connection?

no, you don’t need to pay anything to distribute your Mac OS application. Depending upon how you choose to distribute it, you can create an installer, or build an .app bundle that user puts in their application directory. You can host your distribution (such as your website) for people to download and install your software.
