    Nice problem, here is a solution I stole from the PHP Manual:

    function countdim($array)
    {
        if (is_array(reset($array)))
        {
            $return = countdim(reset($array)) + 1;
        }
    
        else
        {
            $return = 1;
        }
    
        return $return;
    }
