Maybe HTML/CSS gurus can explain? I find it somewhat ironic given the focus of the site.

Probably because it uses CSS3, and CSS3 is not completely supported (or completely unsupported) in IE8. For example, the website uses heavily RGBA colors (colors containing transparency).
It also uses some HTML 5 tags as
<section/>, which are neither supported in IE8.
