So this is the code which makes me sad :

Is there a smarter way to assign a string value corresponding integer

You can use Convert.ChangeType

if (idFieldInfo != null)
{
     var type = idFieldInfo.PropertyType;
     idFieldInfo.SetValue(entity, Convert.ChangeType(id, type), null);
}
