Strange:

switch(type) {
    case NSFetchedResultsChangeInsert:
        int x = 5; // error: "Expected expression before int"

        break;
}

So it isn’t possible to create a local variable in an switch-case-block?

Did you try adding curly braces?

switch(type) {
    case NSFetchedResultsChangeInsert:
        {
            int x = 5; // error: "Expected expression before int"

            break; 
        }
}
