But this will:

$server = "server";
C:\Users\ss\Documents\Scripts\PSTools\PsExec.exe \\$server hostname;

    Try appending a & to the front of the command:

    & C:\Users\ss\Documents\Scripts\PSTools\PsExec.exe \$server $cmd;
