    Thanks Thomas for the gwt version suggestion. I also got some help from the developer of Kineticgwt. It turns out that I need to upgrade two things. One for gwt and the other for gwt maven plugin.

    The plugin version:

            <plugin>
                <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
                <artifactId>gwt-maven-plugin</artifactId>
                <version>2.5.0-rc2</version>
                <executions>
                    <execution>
                        <goals>
                            <goal>compile</goal>
                        </goals>
                    </execution>
                </executions>

    gwt version:

        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.google.gwt</groupId>
            <artifactId>gwt-servlet</artifactId>
            <version>2.5.0</version>
            <scope>runtime</scope>
        </dependency>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.google.gwt</groupId>
            <artifactId>gwt-user</artifactId>
            <version>2.5.0</version>
            <scope>provided</scope>
        </dependency>
