    It wraps around, due to integer overflow, to Integer.MIN_VALUE:

    System.out.println(new AtomicInteger(Integer.MAX_VALUE).incrementAndGet());
System.out.println(Integer.MIN_VALUE);

    Output:

    -2147483648
-2147483648
